A history of the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries in Russia, written down on the basis of court records. A colorful, fast-paced tale of neighborly disputes, magnate conflicts, royal blackmail and noble privileges. Although the author focuses on only one century, she takes a close look at it from today’s perspective, filtering events through the lens of contemporary issues and values.

In the collection of over a hundred stories, the author analyses the attitudes, choices and actions of her characters. She tells about who they thought they were, how they understood the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and their place in it, its legal and social order, and what rules and rituals accompanied them in their everyday lives. The common, 17th-century history comes to life thanks to colorful stories about events and people from centuries ago.
