Košice Modernism

In the 1920s, the Slovak city of Košice was a vibrant centre of artistic life.

The multicultural character of the place fostered the atmosphere of openness and tolerance, which attracted numerous artists. At the time, the city became a space for dialogue for artists representing surprisingly diverse stylistics and embracing a variety of inspirations. A bilingual catalogue of the exhibition “Košice Modernism” introduces this amazing mosaic of artistic personalities with superb paintings by artists such as Sándor Bortnyik, Anton Jaszusch, Eugen Krón, František Foltýn, Géza Schiller, Koloman Sokol, Konštantín Bauer, as well as with archive photographs, maps, exhibition posters, and essays written by specialists in arts and culture of Central Europe. An extensive album offers a comprehensive picture of the true phenomenon of Košice in the interwar period.
