The history of Lithuania, from prehistoric times to regaining independence in the 90s of the 20th century. “The History of Lithuania for Everyone” is a book that is not “written” per se, but rather “told” thanks to its quick and flowing narration. Tomas Venclova, poet and writer, philologist, and culture historian, embellishes his text with quotes not only from traditional sources, such as chronicles, but also from literature (Lithuanian, Polish, and Russian).

The author avoids copying the stereotypical images of Lithuania, including those linked to Polish-Lithuanian connections. He also abolishes the existing myths. Venclova tells the story of his country in the style that his Polish readers expect based on his previous essays – he constantly comments and judges. Coming close to journalism in sections where events of the past influence the present or provoke lively discussion in modern Lithuania. It is a valuable insight into how Lithuanians perceive their future.
